You can’t argue with the Dacia Logan’s practical, no-frills approach when it comes to running costs. It offers the boot space of a class of cars that includes the VW Golf and Ford Focus estate, but in the spec listed here costs under ten grand.

Again, the change to the road tax rules has penalised the diesel model so the entry-level petrol Logan with a 1.0 litre engine is the cheaper car to run.
