New Geometry A electric car launches Geely's new EV brand

New Geometry electric-only manufacturer announced at Shanghai, with 10 models to launch by 2025

Chinese carmaker Geely has announced the birth of a new brand at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. Geometry will become a new electric-only arm of the company, which also owns Volvo and the LEVC London Taxicab manufacturer, and its first car will be a saloon known simply as the Geometry A.

Similar in size to a Toyota Prius, the A features drag-reducing design features like fared-in door handles and disc-like alloy wheels; contributing to a drag coefficient of just 0.2375 - roughly the same as a Tesla Model 3.

Best electric cars to buy

A result of the slippery shape mixed with a 61.9kWh battery in Long Range models allows for an official range of 311 miles. A Standard model will also be offered, providing a 255 mile range. Both feature a single electric motor: it produces 161bhp, 250nm and a 0-62mph time of 8.8 seconds.

Official charging numbers have yet to be confirmed, but a 30 minute top up is enough to take the charge level from 30 to 80 per cent full.

With tie-ins to Volvo within the Geely group, the Geometry is claimed to deliver class-leading safety. Features like a speed-limiting key which can be used by family members and friends borrowing the car is much like the Swedish brand’s recently announced Care Key, while other safety features include front and rear collision warning, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, lane change assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop and go functions.

These systems will combine to offer a ‘Level 2 plus’ autonomous driving system - a first for a pure electric vehicle in China.

An Conghui, Geely Auto Group President and CEO said “Geometry is our answer to the future of the [electric car] industry, a representation of our ideals, and a firm step into a ‘beautiful new world.’”

The A will become one of ten new Geometry models released before 2025. The family of saloons, SUVs, crossovers and MPVs will continue the alphabet naming strategy of the A, and will use a range of exclusively developed platforms.

Geely says that it has already received 27,000 orders for the A, two-thirds of which are destined for markets outside of China. Right-hand drive models have been engineered and confirmed for certain overseas markets, but official UK imports are still to be decided.
