Revised Mercedes CLS spotted again

Revised four-door Mercedes CLS coupe seen testing near the brand’s headquarters

A facelifted Mercedes CLS is on the way, with our spy photographers spotting it for a second time in recent months as it underwent final tests near the German manufacturer’s Stuttgart HQ.

Given the almost complete lack of camouflage, it seems likely the moderately revised four-door coupe will make its official debut at this month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, prior to going on sale in late September.

These images also confirm our suspicion that the updated 2015 CLS will only receive minor styling tweaks, rather than a complete overhaul. Most notable amongst the changes is a more pronounced front bumper, featuring large curved air inlets and smoother lines similar to those found on the new Mercedes C-Class.

The grille itself is now softer and wider as well, while the internal headlight design has been updated, too. Down the sides, there are slightly more prominent sills. Completing the new look are slimmer, more horizontal taillights and a slightly chunkier rear bumper.

While the interior isn’t visible in these pictures, we know Mercedes will fit a larger COMAND infotainment display screen, mounted within the dashboard and possibly paired to the manufacturer’s new touchpad control. The steering wheel is set to benefit from a moderate redesign, too.

As this is only a small facelift, the existing range of petrol and diesel engines is likely to remain unchanged, including the 201bhp 2.1-litre four-cylinder CDI capable of a claimed 54.3mpg. For the range-topping CLS 63 AMG, power will once again come from the twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 that generates 549bhp and 700Nm of torque.

There’s currently no word from Mercedes on how much the new CLS will cost, however with the same set of engines and trim levels expected, any price increases are likely to be modest – the entry-level 250 CDI currently starts from £47,610.
