Volkswagen California 2.0 TDI (140) BlueMotion Technology Beach, 57.7%

Volkswagen California

Our top 20 depreciation busters range from sports cars to SUVs, and include new and old models. But we didn’t expect a van-based camper to be a residuals hit.

The California is one of the few production-ready campers on the market. VW has a long history of building versatile workhorses, and that’s why this model has made our ranking.

With prices starting at in excess of £35,000, it’s not cheap, but the large interior provides room for a bed. Plus, there’s a second double bed set into the pop-up roof.

While the Beach model does without the two-burner hob, sink and fridge you get in the California SE, it’s still a great choice for a quick getaway. And with a predicted residual figure of 57.7 per cent, you can be sure that you’re getting great value from your camper, as well as a cheap holiday.

Of course, there are compromises to be made in the way the California drives – it’s based on a commercial vehicle after all. But that is soon forgotten when you arrive at your destination and are able to make use of the big VW’s versatile interior and useful additions.

Price now: £36,810

Value after three years: £21,239
