As an all-rounder, the 3008 has plenty to offer, with decent performance, lots of space and generous kit. The Grip Control package is an interesting addition, but not many UK buyers are likely to specify this option – the standard car already has a sophisticated traction control system, and we suspect this would be more than adequate in most situations.

The brilliant new twin-turbo diesel engine makes the 740d the ultimate BMW 7-Series – but is this Peugeot’s ultimate 3008? With a new add-on traction package called Grip Control, the front-wheel-drive crossover is not only aiming to compete with MPVs and family hatches, but off-roaders, too.

Grip Control is a £300 option, and brings smaller 16-inch alloys with special mud and snow tyres. At the heart of the system, though, is intelligent traction control which can vary the amount of torque sent to the front wheels.

A dial next to the gearlever enables drivers to choose from normal, mud, snow or sand modes, which adapt the power delivery to the conditions – in a similar way to Land Rover’s Terrain Response set-up.

Does it work? Well, the 3008 handles wet roads and green lanes – which are likely to be the limit of most owners’ mud-plugging. And on tarmac, the driving experience is tidy and refined, particularly with our model’s 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine.

The best thing about this Peugeot, though, is its cabin, which offers Audi-like design and quality. It works really well with the panoramic glass roof to make for a spacious and classy environment
