New Volkswagen Golf GTE priced over £3k less than the old one

The new VW Golf GTE now costs £3,420 less than before, despite packing more kit as standard

The hybrid Volkswagen Golf GTE will cost £3,420 less than before, while also adding kit like the Active Info Display as standard. That means prices start from £28,150 after the government’s £2,500 plug-in car grant.

All cars come with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav as standard. Full LED front and rear lights with scrolling indicators are also included, along with the aforementioned digital Active Info Display dials and Volkswagen’s Car-Net App Connect functionality.

The GTE Advance adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a Winter Pack including heated seats, tinted rear windows and a front centre armrest. It also adds the brand’s updated Discover Navigation system. The 9.2-inch Discover Navigation Pro setup with gesture control is an option. Prices for the GTE Advance start from £29,635.

Like before, the GTE uses a 1.4-litre TSI turbo petrol engine mated to an 8.7kWh lithium-ion battery and electric motor. It can be charged in three and a half hours from a domestic plug, or just over two hours from a wallbox.

VW Golf GTE 2017 review

VW has also installed Traffic Jam Assist on the revised GTE, allowing semi-autonomous driving at speeds of up to 37mph. The car can travel up to 31 miles on electric power alone, and can hit 81mph in pure EV mode. The same four driving modes are carried over.

E-Mode ensures the Golf uses only battery power, while GTE utilises the battery and petrol engine for optimum performance. Battery Charge uses the engine to charge the batteries, while Hybrid intelligently switches between electric and petrol depending on your driving style.

The Golf GTE has a range of 514 miles in total, and can sprint from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds. The standard model emits 38g/km of CO2, with a quoted 166mpg combined fuel economy. The bigger wheels of the Advance model push emissions up to 40g/km, while returning 157mpg.

Alongside the standard Golf, e-Golf, GTI and R, the new GTE is available to order now.
